What is a Herniated Disc?

Essentially, disc herniations occur due to complications to the rubbery discs located throughout your spine. These discs become herniated when the jelly-like substance inside the discs (known as the “nucleus”) protrudes out through the rubbery part of the disc. The discs act as “shock-absorbers” and help maintain comfort by preventing joint pain. These can lead to nerve irritation, which creates pain and discomfort in the affected area. These disc herniations can occur at any spine level, in either the neck (cervical) or back.

What Are Symptoms of Herniated Discs?

Typically, this ailment develops in the lower back, but cervical herniated discs are also reasonably standard. Symptoms tend to manifest on only one side of the body, depending on where the disc herniation has developed on the spine. If you’ve noticed that you’ve developed any of the following symptoms, please be aware that a herniated disc could be the culprit:

  • The onset of pain throughout the arms or legs. These pains could be in the form of sharpness or a burning sensation.
  • Numbness and tingling sensations are both also prevalent symptoms. Both can have a radiating feeling in the arms or legs, and they can come and go frequently.
  • Muscle weakness is also common for patients who suffer from herniated disc pain. Similar to numbness and tingling, muscle weakness may also occur in the extremities.

Herniated Disc Treatment Options

At our office in Huntington, Dr. Picard can perform spinal manipulation to help relieve the symptoms associated with herniated disc pain. These manipulations typically target lower back pain and allow the patient to feel relief from symptoms. Other treatment options may include using hot or cold compresses to provide pain relief and decrease the tension in the affected area. Your local chiropractor can also recommend lifestyle changes that may help you prevent the onset of pain and discomfort.
