Chiropractic Care and Your Health
What is Chiropractic Care?

The nervous system, which is composed of the brain, spinal cord and millions of nerves, controls the functions of the body.Picard Chiropractic - SpineThe spinal column which is formed by 24 moving bones or vertebrae, protects the spinal cord. If the vertebrae lose their proper alignment or motion, nervous system dysfunction and poor health can be the result. Chiropractic care detects, reduces and prevents nervous system dysfunction by restoring the vertebrae to their functional positions.

How Can the Spine Be a Cause of Illness?

The nerves forming the spinal cord branch off to form the spinal nerves which extend through small openings between the vertebrae. If the vertebrae become misaligned, a state called Vertebral Subluxation Complex (VSC), irritation of the spinal nerves, muscles, lymphatic vessels and blood vessels can result leading to pain and specific health problems such as headaches, sciatica, radicular pain, fatigue as well as many other related signs and symptoms. Picard Chiropractic - Healthy BackWhat is the Chiropractic Plan of Care?

Dr. Picard will obtain a complete case history and perform a thorough physical examination of your posture, reflexes and muscle strength. If necessary, additional diagnostic methods such as x-rays, MRI and blood work will be used to guide Dr. Picard in creating an individualized care program based upon the structure and health of your spine. In addition. Dr. Picard works closely with other health care providers, such as orthopedists and neurologists, in the community. He will make referrals to the providers if neccessary to obtain the best treatment for your condition.

The plan of care will be based upon your age, physical condition, lifestyle and unique spinal problem(s). The primary course of treatment will be spinal manipulation or "adjustments" to return individual vertebrae to their proper position and motion. Additional procedures may be used to reduce inflammation, provide pain relief and enhance healing. These procedures include superficial heat, electro-muscle stimulation, cryotherapy (ice), diathermy, massage therapy and ultrasound.

The plan of care is composed of three stages. During the first stage, initial intensive care, treatment is directed toward reducing or eliminating the most obvious symptoms. Visits may be frequent depending upon the severity of your condition. The objective of the second phase of treatment, rehabilitative care, is to stabilize spinal functions and promote complete healing. The third stage involves preventive wellness care aimed at maintaining a healthy spine.
